Friday, May 1, 2020 at 3:44 PMThe Libertarian Party isn’t like other parties, because, as many great leaders have pointed out, we are an “ism”. There is such a thing as Libertarianism. It has a definition. It has an independent meaning.
We can fight for Libertarianism. Or we can fail to. But we can’t redefine it. We don’t have that power.
Our platform can reflect Libertarianism. Or it can fail to. But our platform cannot change what Libertarianism is.
Libertarianism rejects government schools, and government funded schools. There is no exception to that. Minarchism, anarchism, classical liberalism, and voluntarism all reject government schools. The Libertarian Party can represent that. Or it can fail to. But the Libertarian Party, all the delegates, the entire LNC, even by unanimous vote, cannot change that every form of Libertarianism rejects government schools.
The Republican Party platform isn’t restricted by any external philosophy. Their platform has no external standard to achieve or fall short of. The “Republican” view on any political position is anything the GOP wants it to be.
But the Libertarian view is not just anything the LP wants it to be. We can fight for Libertarianism. Or we can fail to.
Since 2008, we have failed to. Our presidential nominees have said more anti-Libertarian things than Libertarian things. Gary Johnson wanted to cut government spending by $0. His “Fair Tax” was revenue neutral. He refused to talk about ending the Drug War or abolishing government schools. But he was very clear that Libertarians supposedly support a “social safety net”. Bill Weld was all set to remove gun rights without due process, saying that anyone on a watch list shouldn’t have the right to buy guns.
Justin Amash is yet another in that line. He playacts at Libertarianism for every minor issue. But he has voted to increase government school spending, and never said anything public about abolishing them.
If we want someone who will increase government school funding and also hates Trump, there is an entire party for that: www.Democrats.org.
But if you want to fight to end the welfare state and the income tax: www.VoteVohra.com.
