KUDOS TO the Santa Fe County Commission for passing on the purchase of AR-15 weapons for the Santa Fe sheriff’s department SWAT officers. . . . Instead of just waiting, as Sheriff Mendoza seems inclined to do because of “the current climate in the nation,” I recommend the funds be redirected to a buyback and destruction of this type of weapon from civilians who have no legitimate need for them. AW

Why the “social workers, housing and homelessness specialists, and violence prevention coordinators” can’t be attached to AFR or APD on an as-needed basis is beyond me.
But hey, when the existing City departments can’t get the job done, feel free to create another one out of thin air!
How many people who are connected to Keller or his buddies will be hired to staff this new department?
As for “defunding” APD, chances are that whatever funds taken away from this year’s budget will be replaced and then some for next year’s budget.
I for one would like to know what City department(s) Keller will be shutting down to make room in the budget for this new department?
