[LPNM] Policy Proposals 2017 v.1

Right to Own and Carry Weapons — “Gun Control is Using Both Hands” — “Molon Labe” (title cribbed from Joe Nichols)

  1. The LPNM calls for an amendment to the State Constitution changing Article II, Section 6 from

“No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes, but nothing herein shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons. No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms.”

    to this —

“No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes. No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms.”

  2. Call for legislative repeal or judicial overturning of NMSA:
    1. 30-7-2 prohibition against concealed weapons
    2. 30-7-8 prohibition against switchblades
    3. 3. 30-7-13 prohibition against carrying weapons on a bus

Or just call for the repeal or overturning of NMSA 30-7 in its entirety.

Here’s a partial list of my preferences for electoral policy[1]

  1. Enact uniform signature requirements for all candidates, regardless of partisan affiliation, or lack thereof. Every candidate for a given office should have to get the same number of signatures, and any registered voter should be able to sign any candidate’s nominating petition. No more of this bit about having to get signatures from only people registered with one party. End the current rule that if you sign more than one candidate’s petition, all of your nominating signatures are invalidated.
  2. End the practice of using tax dollars to fund the conventions and primaries of the “major party” organizations. Let parties pick their candidates however they choose.
  3. Leave the straight-party voting option off the ballot. If it does get put back on, then put straight “YES” and “NO” options for the bond issues and judicial retention spots on the ballot.
  4. Explicitly allow ballot selfies — basically, repeal NMSA 3-8-50 (A)(1).
  5. Eliminate all forms of public campaign financing. If you really want a form of candidate subsidies in place, let the parties do it themselves. Or set up a domestic non-profit LLC (something like a 501-c-3 under the current federal tax code). Make sure that its charter forbids its officers from lobbying the Roundhouse or any other governmental body, or from accepting any money from the public treasury. While you’re at it, make sure its charter also forbids its officers from making statements on any other issue while representing the organization.
  6. If you seriously want to give the candidates a hard time about campaign finance, don’t limit how much they can take from any one donor.
  7. I support electoral fusion — if someone can get nominated by both the LP and GOP, CP, whatever, more power to them.
  8. Parties should also have the discretion and right to reject prospective candidates based upon their stated principles, bylaws, whatever.

My position on eminent domain is that “just compensation” should be strictly defined as the property owner’s asking price. Otherwise it’s a no-go.

Monetary policy? I’m OK for you accepting whatever medium of exchange you want. If you want to play the currency speculation game, that’s cool, too, just don’t defraud anyone.

Other positions of mine — see here for examples

I think that further codification of the Dallas Accord is in order as a catch-all, something like this —

The Libertarian Party of New Mexico, its officers, its candidates, and its spokespeople, as well its affiliate organizations, their officers, candidates and spokespeople, shall refrain from calling for, endorsing or otherwise supporting any expansion of government at all levels, including but not limited to its expense, its intrusiveness, or its reach and power over the private sector.

Just Say “NO!” to Tim Keller

Why should I support Tim Keller for Mayor of Albuquerque?

I don’t.

Allow me some space to list some reasons —

OK, that’s enough. He wants any more publicity from me, he can send me a check for it. Because I’ve already paid for it, to a degree — see the bit above about tax-funded campaigning.

    From the article :

“The question is, why does it matter? Because both left and right need to learn to take the long view — the preservation of our country and our freedoms.”

So what existing regulations and statutes are each “side” — the “left” and “right” — willing to fight to repeal or otherwise do away with?

  2. Re: nmpolitics.net: Internet sales tax receives bipartisan support

    From the article —

“‘It’s really just closing a loophole,” said Rep. Monica Youngblood, R-Albuquerque.”

So amongst the five Republicans on the House Business and Industry Committee (Alonzo Baldonado, Yvette Herrell, Tim D. Lewis, Jane E. Powdrell-Culbert, and Monica Youngblood), only Rep. Herrell has what it takes to stand up for taxpayers.

Seriously, State and local governments don’t need more money, they need to get out of everyone’s way more and let people live their lives.

I have been asked why I did not stick around after speaking against the Gunowner Persecution and Legislative Bureaucracy Enhancement Bill (HB 50) to speak for the Cannabis Tax Slavery and Legislative Bureaucracy and Revenue Act (HB 89). I thought I was pretty clear about why on Living Liberty two weeks ago. But here is exhibit A. Read that title and weep.

So let me get this straight — the vaccinated kids are at risk from the unvaccinated kids? Isn’t that a bit backwards, in that the very point of vaccination is to make the person receiving the vaccine at less risk of contracting the disease in question?

  6. Re: nmpolitics.net – Felons skirting background checks by buying guns online, group says

If “Everytown for Gun Safety” was truly about promoting firearms safety, they would offer training where people could learn how to handle, use, carry and store firearms in a safe manner.

Instead, that sort of training is offered by the outfit that “Everytown for Gun Safety” complains about on a regular basis as The Scourge Of America — the National Rifle Association of America.

While “Everytown for Gun Safety” could be offering firearms training, all they do instead is lobby governmental bodies in the name of restricting the inherent individual, civil, Constitutional right of Americans to own and carry weapons. The Constitution doesn’t give anyone that right — the right is a pre-existing one, accorded to everyone at birth as a matter of being born as a sapient (self-aware) entity.

White, black, Latin, Asian, or Native, gay, straight or bi, cis or trans, male or female, Christian, Jew, Hindu, pagan or Muslim — the Second Amendment doesn’t discriminate.

Here’s a list of the NRA-affiliated sites and pages that offer various forms of training:

    https://gunsafetyrules.nra.org/
    https://firearmtraining.nra.org/
    https://mqp.nra.org/
    http://nrainstructors.org/
    https://rso.nra.org/
    https://coach.nra.org/
    https://onlinetraining.nra.org/
    https://eddieeagle.nra.org/

And that’s just what’s on the NRA site. There are thousands of NRA-accredited instructors across the nation.

The question remains — what is “Everytown for Gun Safety” doing, besides running phone banks and doing media buys to further the cause of victim disarmament?

I just checked their website and it seems that they’re not doing much of anything training-related, but they sure are doing a lot of phone-banking in New Mexico —

We’ve had a few — Inauguration Day and the 21 Jan “Womens’ March” in the Downtown area of ABQ, and Santa Fe and Las Cruces. And the recent visit of Milo Yiannopoulos to the UNM main campus in ABQ (27 Jan) got a little hairy — at least 50 NM State Police in and around the event, including their EOD team, plus UNMPD, UNM Security and Securitas officers on scene. After the speech, they escorted Milo out of the ballroom through the back areas, while keeping the attendees in the ballroom for another 20-30 minutes. When they did let us out, we had to go through a cordon of LEOs (some reports say Bernalillo County SO was on scene, as well) in riot gear.

As for the illegals, there are bills in the State Legislature to make New Mexico a “sanctuary state,” and the Democrat-controlled Legislature recently invited Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to address the Roundhouse, but did not extend the same invitation to Trump.

Here’s a brief recap of the 27 January Milo event at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque —

I was there (right side of the center aisle, last row), heard the anti-Milo fascists thumping on the doors at the back of the ballroom before they brought Milo out, had to wait about 20-30 minutes after it was over before the NM State Police would let any of the attendees leave the ballroom, etc.

I will say that it wasn’t one of his better speeches. Milo came out wearing cop-fetish gear (a black tactical-type vest with “POLICE” in white lettering on it).

There must have been about 50 NMSP officers, including EOD (“bomb squad”) in and around the ballroom, along with UNMPD, UNM Security and Securitas officers.

As we were departing from the SUB, we had to go through a cordon of cops in riot gear to get to the nearby parking structure.

UNM had the entire food court at the SUB shut down. I’m guessing that the decision for that one was made by UNM for “security concerns.” I didn’t have any chance to get dinner until 8:30 PM that night.

I don’t have much contact with the local immigrants. The local “lib” “prog” types have been making public offers of “sanctuary” and talking about setting up some sort of “underground railroad” in local media and on Facebook. Which is operationally idiotic if the point of the exercise is to actually hide these people.

As for the illegals themselves, most of them are here to work, not stir shit up. By and large, you can’t get your roof fixed in ABQ if not for them, for example. The current Lieutenant Governor (Republican John Sanchez) either owns or owned a roofing company (Rightway Roofing) and more than likely employed a few of them.

As for the protests and riots, there probably was a good amount of locals in the ranks. I’m guessing that they used the ABQ Center for Peace and Justice as a rally point for these events — it’s close to both UNM and the Downtown area, and the location itself is a clearinghouse of sorts for the local “left” — just about every “lib” “prog” whackjob group leaves its brochures there, at the very least.

“You’re on the right and libertarian quadrant of the political spectrum! You prize individualism and personal liberty above all else. You believe in private property and the free market. You tend to be patriotic but you’re sceptical of the state and you find little to no value in government institutions. You believe that success depends on the individual’s ability to pull themselves up by their own boot straps and take advantage of the opportunities they have. You see taxes as a form of oppression and you believe that the greatest threat to freedom is big government. You believe in a society of independent and hard-working individuals who take care of themselves. You want big brother out of your bedroom, out of your bank account, and off your property!”

Does anyone but me remember a few years ago when UNM built a brand new recreation building at the Main Campus for 48 million? Maybe stuff like that might have something to do with this?

There’s that, and the fact when UNM fired football coach Mike Locksley after Locksley assaulted and battered one of his assistant coaches in 2011, UNM ended up giving Locksley a million or so to go away quietly. Maybe that sort of thing might have to do with New Mexico’s collegiate financial woes?
